Re: 12.12 Final Project Description

Aesthetics: Kant, Dewey, Ayers towards Shelley, Global Pulse A brief analysis of aesthetics and how they might be applied towards data visualizations of the more natural construction, such as Shelley, versus the formal construction, such as Global Pulse. The paper briefly introduces the aesthetics o...

Re: 11.21 Status of Work-in-Progress

I'm currently working my way through Kant and Dewey's aesthetics to give myself a grounded space for discussion of the work of visual complexity and Ward Shelley. http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/kant-aesthetics/ http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/dewey-aesthetics/ http://www.amazon.com/Art-as-Exper...

Re: 10.24 Share some Code

Here's my code for the homework: This code creates two searches using the MySQL database we have been using, taken from the Seattle Public Library. It does an initial search for books on with the term coffee in the title and stacks a second search for politic in the title on top of that. The grey ba...

In attempting to explore the beauty of information visualized, I will explore two contrasting visions. One view will explore a pragmatic, ...

Re: 10.10 Cultural Analytics Review + Sketch

Manovich's ideas are certainly interesting, though I'm not quite sure I entirely understand them. In some sense there's an argument for the expansion of a software type that is culturally aware by tracing many types of data, but to me this seems like artifice. And given that upon the construction of...

Re: 2. Wk 3. Data Mining/MySQL Ideas + Google Reviews here

Here's what you do: Note: I've updated the query to exclude checkouts prior to 2006. 1. Run query 2. a) In HeidiSQL, right click the results and click "Export grid data to file". b) in Sequel Pro click on the sprocket icon below the results pane and select "export results". 3. Save as a csv file. 4...

Re: 2. Wk 3. Data Mining/MySQL Ideas + Google Reviews here

This is just a question, but can anyone explain in a little detail as to how to export the data you're looking at in the SQL program (HeidiSQL in my case) so that Google can use it to make correlations? Right now I have exported the data to multiple file types (XML, CSV, SQL, HTML, LaTex) and while ...

Re: 1. Respond To Kosara Schneiderman Fry Here

Didactic Data - Stephen Keating I think that one of the first questions everyone asks when examining a piece of data is "how is it useful?" But when I think about this question, it leads me to yet another question. What determines usefulness? It is a rather important question when attempting to unde...
