"Collective Brain"
mind uploading and neuroimaging technologies

The Collective Brain utilizes the hypothetical process of mind uploading, in which an individual's brain is mapped in great detail and copied to a computational device. This process creates an artificial brain that would theoretically behave in a faithful manner to its original.

Upon entering the gallery, visitors' brains are mapped out using MRI and SPECT technology. A randomly assigned section from each visitor's brain is selected to be entered into the Collective Brain. Although portions of the viewers' minds make up the Collective Brain, it is an autonomous entity that can produce its own thoughts.

After getting their brains scanned, viewers walk into a movie theater-like setting, where they can sit down and watch the image of the projected Collective Brain. By entering questions or statements into the keyboards that accompany each chair, participants can interact with the group mind - however, as it is its own thinker, it can choose to ignore or acknowledge the viewers' input.

Every time the Collective Brain has a thought, it is displayed on the screen, opposite which are the statements and questions entered in by the audience themselves. In the middle is an image of the Collective Brain. Each thought it has requires using one or multiple sections of the brain, which light up on the image as the thought is being processed and displayed on the screen. As each section of the brain corresponds to a viewer/participant in the room, all thoughts being displayed on the screen have direct links to individual audience members. So, when a thought is being produced using a given individual's section of the brain, their keyboard lights up to indicate that the Collective Brain is utilizing their hypothalamus, for example, to talk about an emotional memory or thought (the hypothalamus is the section of the brain that regulates primitive emotion).

Interaction with and observation of the Collective Brain allows viewers/participants to learn about the connections between the mechanical and natural mind. It also prompts them to think about group dynamics and the way in which individuals can greatly affect the nature of group discourse. It also raises broad philosophical questions regarding the existence and authenticity of the human mind.

Kirlian Photography: Visual Emotion

Kirlian Effect
Kirlian photography is a process that measures the Kirlian effect. The Kirlian effect is the electro-photonic glow of an object in response to a pulsed electrical field excitation. Kirlian photography has diagnostic potential because the ‘aura’ has been found to indicate stress levels.

Technology
Dr. Konstantin currently researches the Kirlian effect in Russia. He observes the Kirlian effect by Gas Discharge Visualization which is exposed by the perturbation technique. His instrument uses glass electrodes to create a pulsed electrical field excitation to measure electro- photonic glow.

Kirlianresearch.com is selling a GDV software which records an image of the electro-photonic glow and sends it to a computer that shows the Kirlian effect in real time. This display can be shown as a snapshot, a series of images or a GDV movie.

Device
I propose to make a piece that uses the Kirlian effect measurements to create an interactive display. As of now, The machines that are in use record this effect digitally and require physical contact from the object. I would make a chair which is also a sensor which captures the Kirlian effect off of the objects inside of it. From this sensor the data will be sent to a computer that projects the image on to the outside of the chair. In order for this chair to be a sensor it would have to be made out of a semi-transparent acrylic material which would allow the people inside the chair to be able to see their own ‘aura’ shining through.

Exhibition
In order to bring a creative twist to this art project, music will influence the stress levels of the participants. Clinically the Kirlian effect shows stress levels, using this we can influence the Kirlian measurements and change the look of the project. With different levels of stressful music, ranging from very stressful to relaxing, the Kirlian projections will change from person to person in a simultaneous manner.

In a gallery setting the chairs would be hung from the ceiling in visible locations. Each one would have two projectors pointed at the back with the Kirlian measurements projecting on to it. People can see the projections through the chair, because the outside is transparent. The participants would be encouraged to sit in the chairs and become part of the work itself. The music that influences that participants would be played inside the chair, engulfing them, and outside in the gallery space. Organizing the music in this way would allow everyone in the gallery to know the effects of each type of music.

Experience
When people sit in the chair all they will be able to hear is the music being played in the gallery. This music will influence their mood and change their stress levels. By being able to actually see the effects of the music on their stress level, this chair will make people more aware of their own body and it’s responses to external stimuli. This information of the music’s effects will influence how people deal with stress in the future.

TELEPRESCENCE
As shelter has been a basic need for humans throughout time, with a world so advanced today why not have it aid our lives and provide more than just shelter.
By incorporating a 'fever scanner' in the front door threshold of a home the scanner can read the residents temperature upon entering the home. Next the information from the fever scanner will send information to the heating/cooling system built within the home and adjust the temperature accordingly to the homeowners ideal temperature.
Another aspect in creating a home with teleprescence is concerning design and style. Installing internet connected projectors with in the rooms of the home, the wall color, art work and textiles can be changed with the click of a button. The home owner could have a blank room in theory and whenever felt the desire to change from a Victorian style room to a modern minimalist style it would be possible at the click of a button on their computer and upload both the wall paper, or an art work. The projectors would be angled perfectly at the walls, or frame so that you could upload a new piece of art work into a blank canvas instead of purchasing a new piece of art each time your style changed.

Electrochromic Image
Projection Powered
by Night-Vision Camera

Description:

I am taking smart window technology (i.e. electrochromics) and turning it into a unique large area backlit display for nighttime application. The backlighting comes from the building interior and does not require energy. I am combining solar cells, flexible batteries, and night vision sensors with electrochromic technology. Electrochromic materials only use power when switched, so the image projected on the window space persists until it is changed. This saves power. In fact, these display devices act like batteries, since the EC material is charged and discharged when switched between clear and colored states. My project can also work towards cutting costs for the heating and cooling of a building because in the daytime, the displays can act as smart windows and lower the cooling costs for the building. Once the batteries are charged by the solar cells, any excess power can be used elsewhere in the building. The night vision (IR) camera can also be of more use than just capturing an image-the camera can be used to help deter theft since it displays images of people going by the building entrance.

Keywords:
Electrochromic material
Night-vision camera
Solar power

Description of Electrochromic Material:
Electrochromic (EC) materials change color reversibly when an electric current is applied to them and have been developed for use in smart windows, switchable automotive rear view mirrors and flat panel displays. Electrochromic materials fall into two categories, ion insertion or reversible electrodeposition type. Ion insertion materials are thin film materials permanently attached to a transparent conducting substrate. Color change is effected by the simultaneous insertion (or ejection) of ions and electrons into the material. Reversible electrodeposition devices function by reversibly plating and stripping a thin film (like silver) onto a transparent substrate.

EC materials have an inherent memory that eliminates the need for continuous pixel refresh and can lower the power consumption. Power is only required when a pixel is switched. Furthermore, since these are non-emissive displays no external lighting source is needed under ambient lighting conditions.

Extras:
By using electrochromic technology alongside a motion-activated night time camera, my project will display and innovative way to project an image onto the side of a building by changing the pixels between the clear-state and the blue-state. Not only will my project be an interactive visual display, my project will also serve to reduce the heating and cooling costs of a building during the day. Another bonus that my project offers is that during the night, the display can serve as an anti-theft strategy because every person walking past the building will be captured in film and then projected onto the building window-space.

Project: eClouds

Short description: "Thousands of small square panels of electrically switchable laminated plexiglass, that perform as pixels.eCloud is a dynamic sculpture inspired by the volume and behavior of an idealized cloud. Clouds are ephemeral and in perpetual transformation, their abstract shapes are constantly teasing the mind of the observer to ’see’ and interpret. Clouds focus our attention to the sky and connect us to our fascination with flying The sculpture is composed of electrically switchable plexiglass or Smart Glass. This material has the ability to progressively graduate opacities with the transmission of an electrical charge: when in neutral, the panel is opaque and when sent an electronic charge the material transitions to visually transparent."- http://uebersee.us/projects/ecloud

Title
Cymaitc Fountain-by Manuel Antonio Ramirez

Keywords
Synesthesia, Cymatics, LED, LRAD acoustic cannon, hypersonic sound, Magnetic Fuild, Morpho towers,Glass Speaker Technology
Description:
-Intro-
The origin of this project is from my interests in synesthesia and cymatics. What is synesthesia? What is cymatics? The word Synesthesia comes from the ancient greek words syn and aethesia, syn-meaning together and aethesia-meaning sensing. It is a neurological condition by which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic and involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway. Examples are things like being able to see sound, to taste sound, and to taste colors or numbers. Cymatics is the art and science of visualizing sound through any physical medium ( a computer software, liquid, sand, salt). Cymatics analyzes the process by which sound manipulates and changes a medium. The field of Cymatics has a long history, from Da Vinci and Galileo with their observations of resonance, to English scientist Robert Hook and his modes of vibration. Also Ernst Chladni publishing “Discoveries and Theories of Sound” discussing how during his experiments with metal and sand he was able to produced geometrical patterns using sound, and finally Hans Jenni coining the term Cymatics.

-Goals of the project-
The Purpose of the project is to create a synesthetic interactive experience through the use of sound and light. The installation of this project will be in open space, preferably in a museum where spectators will interact and perceive sound, color, and light in unison. A fountain twelve feet in diameter and filled with a special magnetic fluid (ferro fluid) will be installed in the center of the open space. The fountain will also be equipped with sound, magnets and light technology; this is where sound will be translated into colors, lights and shapes. All Technology and its function will be discussed in greater detail in the next section. The ground around the fountain will be equipped with scattered camouflaged ground sensors with pulsating LED lights. All the sensors in the ground will be connected to each other through LED lights as well (symbolizing neurons). In the ceiling, located exactly over each sensor of pulsating light, Hypersonic sound systems will be installed.

-The Tech-
LED- LED lighting will be used the most throughout the installation. Interactive LED lights will be installed within the glass speakers that surround the fountain, an in the ground sensors and the connections of each. The way these lights will be controlled will be through a centralized computer that will be processing data to produce the whole synesthetic experience. The color of each light will depend on the note that the speaker or pulsating ground sensor will be playing.

Hypersonic sound systems-This technology is used to give each person a unique sound experience. The LRAD acoustic cannon produces sound that is inaudible unless the cannon is pointed at you. By placing this technology directly in top of the ground sensor, the person standing there will be able to hear a specific note in unison with the pulsating LED lights on the ground sensor. This technology will also be controlled by the computer that controls the LED lights, and this computer will be responsible for keeping the light and sound synced.
Magnetic Liquid-The fountain will be filled with magnetic fluid, even through the computer cannot control or manipulate the liquid itself, magnets will be utilized to manipulate the liquid, the computer will move the magnets which in turn manipulate the liquid into different shapes.
Glass Speaker Technology-This technology will be installed on the exterior of the fountain to create the sound that everyone can hear. It will also incorporate LED lights that correspond to each note the speaker is playing. Since the glass speakers use a different technique for reproducing sound compared to that of regular speakers, the LED lights installed on them will accentuate this feature while distinguishing the how different colors belong to different sou

Title: Synthetic Air
Keywords: Synesthesia, Bionics, Nanotechnology, exoskeleton
Proposal: A visual experience that affects all the main senses, particularly touch and smell, using bionic technology to help interpret the experience that normally is used to recover something lost. Meant to imitate Synesthesia, a state in which one sense gives an experience of another also. Synesthesia is said to make an experience vividly more memorable, and as such, since we are bodies of several information-gathering systems, it might necessitate to utilize these for faster learning experiences.
Description: It involves a nose sensory device, a neuro-sensor (technology that can "read" the brain, one is listed in the .pdf file), and skin-sensory suit originally made for robotics. It also includes hologram and the user who wears these all these things reinterprets the hologram light and thus changing experiences for another person who walks into the room. The experience is inclosed to one room, and in a way, keeping a small group for "study".

Image taken from:
http://www.moma.org/visit/calendar/exhibitions/1061

The image I used was taken from this site. The idea of the piece is different then my own, but the visual is a guide to how the installation will be set up.

Title: Mapping the Museum
Description:
This piece will take the Black Hawk Helicopter used in the ARMY as a machine to transport tanks, ammo, supplies, troops etc. This Helicopter is equipped with an endless amount of technological innovations. The most stimulating for the eye and for this project is the intense mapping systems. This machine is able to project changes in demographics, temperature, weather patterns, approaching enemies, changes in grid coordinates, etc. all while traveling at high speeds. The project will be set up in a square room, in a museum, where the viewer will access it from one point of entry, and exit the opposite side of the room. The mapping systems will be projected onto the walls as heat maps, coordinate grids, and elevation maps. As the viewer travels through the space they will be virtually displayed as part of the changing map. As they move through the space so will the map, and they will be surrounded with colors that are full of vibrant pixels, which allow for them to see the coordinates etc. The viewer will be able to determine where the map shall go depending on their path of choice. They no longer control the map from a computer but instead use the body as the control system.

Dane Smith - Recognition
The technology that I decided to use was Facial Recognition Technology. Each persons face has 80 different nodal points, or points of recognition. The video camera looks at the person, analyzes their face, and then records that into a data system. I would have this technology placed within a gallery space, and once a person walked in, the technology would then begin to analyze their facial features. I would have the same technology placed on a busy street corner in New York. The technology on the street corner would receive the information gathered by the technology in the gallery space, and then find a person that looks most closely like you. This information would be displayed on LCD monitors that lined the wall, as well as a huge monitor in the middle of the room that would then display everyones analysis.
