Here are a few SQL scripts I was playing with before today's class [access it here]. Look under the "Correlate" tab for scripts to feed Google Correlate.

This is just a question, but can anyone explain in a little detail as to how to export the data you're looking at in the SQL program (HeidiSQL in my case) so that Google can use it to make correlations? Right now I have exported the data to multiple file types (XML, CSV, SQL, HTML, LaTex) and while I can get one Column to return (as in, when I load an exported file it returns all my dates, but not the results from that date), it won't return two columns, and thus I can't actually get it to create correlate tables. Any help would be appreciated.

Here's what you do:

Note: I've updated the query to exclude checkouts prior to 2006.

1. Run query
2. a) In HeidiSQL, right click the results and click "Export grid data to file". b) in Sequel Pro click on the sprocket icon below the results pane and select "export results".
3. Save as a csv file.
4. Important: you will need to go into a text editor or Excel and make sure that the first row of your exported data is a date and value. It must NOT be titles for the columns.
4. Go to: http://www.google.com/trends/correlate/ and select "Enter your own data" next to the search field
5. Click "choose file" and select your file, give it a moment to load.
6. Enter a name for the Time Series.
7. Hit Search.

Let me know if you have any trouble. Google Correlate seems a little buggy. You may have better luck copying and pasting your data from excel right into the spreadsheet field provided.

Reflection 2: Google’s Ngram Viewer, Window on Culture?

The power of publicly available data sets is indisputably plain when we consider those agencies that do not make their data readily available. A quick search for “data sets homeland security” and the best you might find are spreadsheets summarizing the quantity of requests for data they have received under the freedom of information act.#

There can be little doubt then that the availability of a data set like Google’s database of word and phrase counts from the millions of books it has scanned offers a great potential for valuable inquiry. For many that potential is quickly realized in Google’s Ngram Viewer, a tool that correlates two or more phrases over a variable amount of time and renders the result in a line graph. The visualization is accompanied by a chart summarizing the data - the content of which can be clicked to link to search results. The user thereby drills down from the level of the visualization into the details. The details are revealed in the familiar form of search results; a list of the books from which Google aggregated its word count.

In assessing this interface for the data set, we may want to consider Ben Shneiderman’s “Visual Information Seeking Mantra”. Google’s Ngram Viewer is an example of a) overview first and c) details-on-demand. The missing step b) is the “zoom and filter”. In some manner we ought to be able to zoom into the visualization to assess the topography of the data in a little more detail. The topography may very well be affected by typography. As we discovered in class, a typeface peculiar to the 1700s significantly distorts the overview or big picture view of the data. Zoom in, assess the type, filter it out, and reassess the big picture. This is a challenge both for designers and engineers. Meaning does not just come from the big picture and the details, but rather from an understanding that establish nuance by exploring the picture at varying levels of granularity.

The second point we should consider that would have an influence on an approach to visualizing this mammoth data set is an evaluation of how it represents the way words are being used. On the one hand the issue is technical: what is the syntax for the words and how does that shade a correlation with another word? On the other hand the issue is about tactics: in what sense is a word being used? As The New York Times article on Google’s book data set points out, the frequency of the word “men” and “women” clearly converge over the 1970s.# While sincerely not intending a definitive conclusion to the correlation, the article points out that 1970s marks the rise of feminism. A “details-on-demand” review of those books does not disprove this, but the search also only prioritizes those books with the word “women” in the title. What are the books not titled “women” but yet all about “women” and how is the word used in these books? Also, is the word “women” refer to all classes and races of women?

The varying ways that words are used leads into my concluding point, a critique of decision making based on mining and visualizing a data set generated from machine read books. The New York Times article describes the functional possibility of this database for assisting in such tasks as establishing which new words to add to the dictionary. Certainly other decisions could be influenced by an analysis of the data. To this end, the data set and the practice its represents (dubbed Culturomics) ought not to be handled as a value neutral tool, as it is expressed to be by its research leads, Erez Liberman Aiden and Jean-Baptiste Michel. For most people their first experience of the data set will be through the Ngram Viewer. A great experience, but few will likely prove more than their preconception about what the graphed correlation means by rummaging through the details. How do more complex mining and visualization tools challenge these assumption for the more serious user of the data? Also, the legality of the production of this data carries with it a value. The information is produced through machine reading rather than human reading. Liberman Aiden and Michel point out with relief that the value of machine reading is efficiency. Yet, as the article explains, Culturomics is also not legally possible without machine reading constituting a fully separate form of reading to satisfy copyright.

Certainly machine reading as a different class of reader than human reading may facilitate circumnavigation of copyright protection for the benefit of social insight, but the process is not value neutral when the books can be read by machines but not by people. If a data set like this is going to be used to make the kind of insights that influence decisions, then the very method of producing the information becomes a challenge for designers and academics to engage critically. A critique that should be performed by uncovering the dirt in the data mining results, by unveiling the contradictions of data visualizations, and by interrogating the sources. As with the data set on freedom of information act access requests provided by the Department of Homeland Security, the full account remains in the books.

For the Data Mining I am currently exploring the correlation between celebrity deaths and whether or not there is an influx of dvd/literature check outs surrounding the days around/after/day of their death including subsequent anniversaries.

**UPDATE**
Through working through the information of celebrity it was difficult to narrow down and peg check outs simply by scanning the subjects for an actor name, it would need to be a specific title. To break it down so the search could be more streamlined I started examining the check out's of musicians in the months of their death and compared them with different months and previous years. I made a point to use multiple genre's of musicians as well.

-Lucciano Pavarotti (death September 6, 2007)
-Richard Wright (of Pink Floyd( death September 15 2008) )
-Marvin Gaye (death April 1, 1984)
-Kurt Cobain (death april 5, 1994)

In 500 Billions Words Response

Cohen goes on to describe the recent database that Google has been setting up with all of the text from published materials from the 1500’s until present day. It is important to understand that by creating this database you can see trends which have occurred within given languages. It was proven that over time english verbs evolved to change with the changing norms for language. It is interesting to see how trends in the written word have changed through time as well. I believe it is important for us as designers to use these tools to produce compelling arguments which otherwise could not have been made in the past. Large data sets such as this offer an enormous opportunity for us to re-imagine how someone can consume this information and make it interesting for them.

500 Billion Words Review
The “500 Billion Words” project, created through the mutual efforts of two Harvard fellows and Google’s massive book scanning projects, presents an interesting opportunity for scholars in the humanities to use quantitative analysis in their research. However, for me the more interesting point of the article was that a tool such as the Google Ngram is not designed to be exclusively used by or accessible to university scholars. Laymen, young students, or anyone who is interested in exploring cultural trends through history via keywords can utilize Ngram. The article suggests that Ngram can allow students to interact with history in novel ways and to connect him with potentially scholarly research methods at a young age. While this democratization of information is a positive thing, especially in the information age, which prides itself on the ease of accessibility to information across economic and cultural hierarchies, there are problems with Ngram if informational freedom is one of its goals.

As Louis Menand points out, the information gathered on Ngram may not produce meaningful conclusions and the data as presented may not always be entirely accurate. Google’s book project itself creates issues, not only of legality, but of the ownership of information. While Ngram is able to search the database for keywords and draw conclusions, the user is unable to look further into those books that the information is pulled from. This is Google’s defense against copyright infringement claims that have been made by both authors and publishers—while Google maintains a database of the information that is accessible to those working behind the curtain, users are unable to read any of the scanned words, sentences, passages, or books.

If a user wishes to look further into the information retrieved on the database, he still needs to utilize more traditional methods such as a public library (which may, through Google efforts such as these, become a study in obsolescence) or purchasing the book. The disjunctions between Ngram’s access to the information and the human user’s seem to reinstate the hierarchies that already exist in terms of the accessibility of information to “outsiders” (those without the informational privileges of say, a Harvard University post-doctoral fellow). While these issues are not made explicit in the article, and are tangential to its overall point, I though they may be interesting to bring up anyway.

Data Mining Ideas
In terms of our ideas for data mining, in our Monday class I decided to search for words such as “disaster” and “conspiracy” in the months surrounding Hurricane Katrina’s landfall in New Orleans. I found some interesting results regarding prophecy—one book dealt with the foolishness of those who didn’t listen to Noah’s warnings of a flood and comparing Noah’s flood to modern day natural disasters and how they may have been avoided. I’m not sure if I should do a massive search by these keywords (disaster, conspiracy, etc.) and try to pick out patterns in the data or if I should try to search around natural disaster dates and see what pulls up. I’m also not sure if these searches will yield any interesting results, but so far that’s what I’ve looked into.

Got the searches working after a little tweaking, thanks for this. In HeidiSQL the files save as semi-colon delimited fields rather than comma separated fields. So you can use something like Open Office to fix that, but that did bewilder me a bit.

For the article on words, I suppose I am perturbed. Even if we should be able to search through the entirety of mankind's information network, it seems of little use without interpretation, and the authors of the work themselves admit to this. If we find that more words of a certain type appear more often in some era of history, does this suddenly make work which isn't referencing this less relevant? Somehow as many of the other scholars who have viewed the information have noted, much is yet to be seen in relation to whether or not the data gathered will help us or add to the chaos. Thus far, information seems to be winning the battle over man for a dominant cultural role, where culture, the actual practice of culture, loses to the informative ditty about what culture is.

In many ways, I feel that much of what scatterplotting the words of man is about relates to downsizing our intellectual capacity to that of a few points on a graph. We end up talking about 'culturomics' seriously, and there's a problem with the process itself. The article, and much of the work, screams of wanting to be taken seriously, but clearly ends up trying too hard and being perturbing without enlightening. Does the fact that Marilyn Monroe's popularity in printed press rises with her claim to stardom? Is this really something we should be surprised by? There is a level of minutia here that strips the information of being meaningful, and problematically so. Perhaps the end of the tunnel of information is something far darker than previously imagined, a place where information is rendered meaningless by the good intentions of those attempting to sort it. Or perhaps, it is more that the information is merely rendered more meaningless than it already was, a cold comfort that much of the work done is little better than any given part of the surplus population of information.

I do not mean to sound cynical of such information-gathering. It should be encouraging that we are looking at information in new ways, but perhaps it is just that the approach of this information to an academic setting that is not primarily focused in the field of engineering seems less than ideal. It seems difficult for me to imagine a history professor teaching a class based on how often a figure got mentioned in history books written throughout the ages, because statistically he's a significant character. It reduces critical analysis on a deep, fundamental level, whereby a thinking begins to emerge that we can numericize the written word, that certain words have weight, value, importance. It refuses to take works on their cultural or historical merit, grinding them ceaselessly into what can be easily processed. I would be horrified if, in the future, to be a man of letters is to simply read the right words enough times, to know when to say them and where--a statistically mastered conflagration of reality.

David Lazarus - Data Mining/MySQL Ideas + Google Reviews her

Post by lazad518 » Sat Oct 01, 2011 2:36 pm

I found that the amount of pornography taken out in the library has fallen since 2005 by about 30%.

select ckinDateTime, title from transactions2005 where (month(ckinDateTime) = 11) and title like '%pornography%'
58 results
select ckinDateTime, title from transactions2010 where (month(ckinDateTime) = 11) and title like '%pornography%'
29 results

I was considering that there has been an explosion of online free pornography in the last couple of years. I have a family member who works in advertising, but specifically related to the adult entertainment industry and he has shared with me the hardships and the destruction of the pornography industry in the last couple of years, due to the simplicity of handheld filming devices, and the simplicity with which one can shoot, produce and distribute pornography online. Furthermore, the google Ngram illustrating Online Pornography shows a sky rocketing curve from the late 1990s up to 2010. Therefore I was hoping to see if the number of books related to pornography had fallen in the years we have available in the database. And it turns out that there is a significant drop from 2005 to 2010. I am hoping that I can pursue this research and hopefully create a data visualization where I can compare the proliferation of online pornographic free websites, and the fall in pornography taken out of the library.

500 billion words.

500 billion words is a staggering new concept launched by Google, who else? Essentially it makes quantitative analysis available to 8 year olds and up, through a simple web interface. Anyone with a computer can dig in and research through every single book (English, French, Spanish, German, Russian) from the 1500s to 2008. This makes research for anyone, but especially scholars in the humanities immensely more approachable.
Both tools, correlate and draw are extremely interesting, and rather dangerous if you are prone to procrastination. I have spent the last hours trying to get two words that have similar curves. The closest I got, was between 'Football' and 'Baseball'. What is interesting out of that search is the identical drops in frequency during the 2nd world war, and during the great depression. I can already imagine a research paper that studies the impact of economic and military hardships of a country, and the popularity of organized sports.
I can only fathom how useful this tool could have been when writing papers in college. Furthermore, this amount of statistical data could easily have been presented in an immensely complicated an unapproachable way, but as usual, google transcended the user-interface and made the information as easy to read as a children's book. Within minutes, I found myself perusing across millions of data points, exploring the relations of words, and discovering new things second after second. Google keeps pushing the envelope, and whenever someone doubts that they will be able to do it again, they do.

The Shaping of Information by Visual Metaphors - Kosara

This article by Kosara studies the compatibility between visual and verbal metaphors and how they function together in order to allow the viewer to better understand the data. It was found that compatibility between both elements allow the visualizations to be far more efficient and increased the ability of users to answer relevant questions.
However, repeated exposure to incompatible information (visual and verbal), allowed the user to get a better understanding over time. Therefore the results of this study were interesting, but not extremely conclusive. It essentially explored the validity of the metaphorical effect, and attempted to better understand what causes it. I'm not entirely sure I better understand Kosara's data visualization after reading this, but it definitely gave me an insight on how he wants to push the theory and develop into something more of a science.

Data Ontology

Post by bowea324 » Sun Oct 02, 2011 3:20 pm

Project Idea:

The ontology of data bases must also account for moving data. Within this project I hope to look at the speed of return of 10 library resources during different occurrences in time, and visualize these results.

One example would be to look at texts which reference the stock market after the stock market crash of 2008, and compare the speed of return to prior to the stock market crash. Can one situate this as an event in time that effects the changing flow of life or of reading? This is a very interesting ontological question.

To look at the movement of the product, the literature, is to show that data only places a temporary hold on an object which is constantly changing. Library materials come in and out, yet the data of their existence tells a very limited story of the text through time.

By using the command:

select count(*) from transactions2009
where date(ckoutdatetime)> '2008-03-02'
and date(ckoutdatetime)< '2008-06-02'
and subject1 like 'great depression'
or title like 'great depression'
or subject1 like 'finance'
or title like 'finance'

and altering the time and word/phrases searched, I might be able to discover certain books which have been checked out in response to the stock market crash, and hopefully find comparable patterns prior to and after the crash.

500 Billion Words Analysis:

Among the most practical functions of Google's 5.2 million digitized books is the capacity to quickly search search documents for words and phrases of "research" interest without flipping through pages or referencing the index.

One might imagine the history of the Humanities as a sort of slow process of reading and interpreting, whereby the critic slowly and thoughtfully develops a response. Now that Google has brought certain analytical functions to the forefront of humanities research, we might now imagine not only a shift in the speed of research and reading, but certainly also a shift in the qualitative history of reading.

As the article mentions, "databases can transform our understanding of language, culture, and the flow of ideas," one might understand the utility of databases as transforming both the pedagogy of engaging with data, of facing databases as locations of pre-organized knowledge, that must either be re-arranged, deranged or sub-ranged.

The transformation of language by databases helps one to imagine not only the categories thought which language functions, but also the extremely oversimplified blankets that bind language together.

It remains important to deconstruct many of the methods that Google uses in constructing their databases. The history of words and databases is certainly connected with a history of power and domination that must be understood before bringing to light over simplified ideas of cultural trends. These databases, along with the library resources must account for certain marginalized or under published literature throughout history.
