Proj 6 - Time/Space Continuum

We think of the world as existing in 3D space, but in fact the scientific space-time continuum proposes that objects in the universe exist in 4 dimensions: 3D space + time. Photography therefore actually compresses 4 dimensions into a flat 2D image rather then what we normally consider it to do (3D into 2d).

Everytime we take a photo we record a moment out of time, and flatten 3D space. This assignment is intended to consciously explore this process. Create an image or more that explores the intersection of time, depth, space.

Your project can exist in one image using layers or any other relevant Photoshop function. Or it can exist as a sequence of images. Be ready to describe to the class what your ideas are in the creation of your project.

The physicist Heisenberg proposed the "uncertainty principle" in 1927 which simply stated suggests that the position and velocity of a particle cannot both be measured simultaneously: http://abyss.uoregon.edu/~js/21st_centu ... lec14.html Lightwaves enter the lens. Some are in focus, others not. The partial focus and blurring of various focal planes in the photo may have some connection to this principle. The Bauhaus artist/painter/photographer Moholy-Nagy came up with a now famous visual expression that is quite simple in execution: http://0.tqn.com/d/arthistory/1/0/s/u/b ... _09_22.jpg

This project is intended to explore a conceptual approach to photography - a process where lightwaves enter a machine that then records what it receives. This is a form of structure formation. We tend to bypass the process of how an image is made, and innocently buy into what it represents, but as Flüsser says, the more complex the machine, the more ignorant we become as the image produces a simulacrum of what looks like the "real". For your project, make sure to do some online research and then be able to argue your case convincingly.

If any of you are familiar with Baudrillard' simulacrum, this could also be a stimulus for this project: Simulacra are copies that depict things that either had no reality to begin with, or that no longer have an original.[1] Simulation is the imitation of the operation of a real-world process or system over time.[2]

Making art with lights is something I'm interested in. These are a few examples I made. I used a 30 second shutter speed and made the lighting with little finger lights.

For this project, I wanted to focus on how light enters the camera to capture an image. I thought a lot about how the camera works and uses light as a way to create the image seen digitally on the screen. For my images, I used a candle as my light source and played with various techniques of the camera. I tried several shutter speeds as well as using flash or no flash. From my images, I manipulated them on Photoshop using Hue and Curves and layered them on top of other images that I had.

When I think about time, I think not only of the way things move and change in the present, but also the longer process of growing up. The passing of time can be measured in a mere matter of seconds or hundreds of years, and it's a constant state of transition. Lately I've been thinking a lot about what the future has in store for me, and to be honest, I'm a little stressed out. For this project I wanted to create images which explored issues of time as a sequence while allowing me to revert back to a more youthful mindset (primarily through the use of fun swing sets and friends willing to participate).

To make the images I put my camera on bracket mode, which allowed me to take a quick succession of images as each person jumped off the swings. I then created composite images in Photoshop using layer masks.

In order to demonstrate time I played around with the use of lights and a slow shutterspeed. I also edited the images in photoshop adding multiple layers to a few of them

I got inspiration looking and googling at some aspects like:
- shutter speed
- water (pattern, shutter speed, freeze and long time exposition...)
- edgerton pictures
- pattern
- shadows
- generative art
- multiple exposition
- light reflection
...

so i took some picture around

For this photography experiment I will focusing on creating a feeling of movement through time. This feeling of movement with be achieved by using multiple frames and exposures to show that the subject is not static but indeed moving. In this shoot I focused on being able to apply the correct setting to my digital camera I rented. A total of 150 pictures were taken, and they were edited down to 70 solid well lit images which would not require to much image enhancing. After selecting the 15 images I would use to animate the figure I proceeded to fix them first with image balancing tools. While in the process of creating the final image it became apparent that multiple layers would work more appropriately for this final product than multiple exposures in a single frame.
