Proj 7 - Intro to After Effects

Post by glegrady » Fri Feb 15, 2013 3:53 pm

This is an intro assignment to AfterEffects, a step towards our final project. Take only 1 image and transform it using filters creating an interesting rhythmic experience. Think of a drummer who has only 1 drum (in our case, only 1 image) and his/her goal is to create an interesting rhythm through when to hit to generate the drumming experience - and then where to hit the skin to produce subtle differences.

Open After Effects
- Bring in an image about 1024 x 768, 72dpi by pulling it into the "Assets" window which usually is at the left.
- Once there, grab it and pull it into the timeline screen, usually bottom center of screen. Make sure the open window at the bottom is the timeline and not the "render queue" window. You should see 06s, 08s, etc. evenly marked across. Your timeline should be anywhere from 15seconds to 60sec. You can set the length of the animation by selecting Composition settings, and punching in the length next to "Duration".

- Apply a filter by selecting one - like Gaussian blur - position the playback head (red line with yellow mark on top) where you want the filter to take effect. You should see the name of your jpg to the left of the timeline (bottom left window). Click on the little grey arrow tab to get access to the filter. Now you should see two words" Effects" and "Transform". Click on the arrow tab next to Effects, do the same for the filter, and click on the stopwatch icon to place a marker in your timeline. Punch in a number value to set the filter. You should see on the center screen the effect of your numeric setting. Move your playback head to a location near. Click on the diamond on the far left of your effects window (left side of screen). Punch in a different set of numbers.

Redo until the animation is complete. To export as a movie you need to render your animation. Go to Composition in the menu, click on "Add to queue". THe timeline should turn into the "Render Queue" timeline. ON the far right, click on "Render" button. in "OutPut Module" you can leave it as is, or set a different compression. In "Output To:" select desktop. You should see the name of the your file with.mov at the end. Click on "render" at the far right. Once its complete, you should have your video on your desktop. YOU can now publish on YouTube or Vimeo.

Originally I chose to use a picture of a starry sky because I thought it would produce a "pretty" aesthetic, but after working with After Effects I decided to completely destroy the original. The final product was very abstract, and I experimented primarily with adding different blurs and textures. I also wanted to repeat certain frames multiple times in a sort of pulsing motion to play with different speeds.

Here's the original image:

This is my original image. I wanted to take an eerie image and make it even more so.
The effects I used were Ripple, color change (hue), and compound blur. I mostly experimented with different effects, but ultimately chose the ones that I found gave the image more of an eerie effect that I wanted.

This is the video upload

This process took a lot of experimenting and hours spent watching tutorial videos on youtube. In the end the best way to learn this platform is with plenty of time to make mistakes. After all the hard stuff was figured out, I began to have fun putting together the concept I was trying to reach in this video. My goal for this picture was to create a sense of situational awareness. What I mean by this is the image goes in and out of blackness to simulate a person gaining and regaining consciousness, but my twist is when regaining consciousness the image becomes broken up and digitized in a whole new manner using effects and tools I learned to control while experimenting with the system.

I come across some inspiring works of Duane Michals that could be useful for the final project...
d_michals.jpg
particularly the previuos image could be a starting point for my project, for which I think to work with time and space around a picture.
As the label said there are thing that is not possible to show in a picture, there are things happening around, there are many temporal and spatial levels around a flat image, i think i would come out with something about this concept...
Moreover it make come on my mind this 2 videoclips:
Imatation of life - REM - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vqgdSsfqPs
You remind me - Royksopp - http://vimeo.com/2285902

Another source i could probably use is the semiotc concpet of embrayage/debrayage
In semiotics one can find a similar problem in the treatment of the concept pair embrayage and débrayage by A.J. Greimas. Débrayage is a mechanism, by means of which an uttering subject projects the categories of not-me (it), not-here (elsewhere), and not-now (at some other time) into an utterance, resulting in space that is independent of the uttering situation me-here-now. Débrayage is an important operation in Greimas’ theory, which unfolds intersubjective linguistic space. Embrayage returns speech to the person of the speaker and the deictic categories me-here-now. Thus, it always precedes to me and is the most important property of human language. Are deixis and linguistic egocentrism, which seemed so extensive and fundamental, then only secondary phenomena?
I did find nothing better then this for now but iĺl go deeper on this...

My original images were comprised of photographs from studying abroad this summer. Due to confusion with the program and large image size my final product is not exactly how I would have hoped it to turn out. However, here is just my first attempt at playing around with the application and effects:
