Michael Lieblings lab at ECE
He has a background in physics, tomography and digital holography. However his lab is dealing mostly with digital image processing and bioimaging. They buy genetically engineered zebra fish which are transparent tropical fish that are naturally genetically similar to humans. They are genetically engineered so that they can glow under UV light and their hearts can be seen more clearly as they develop.

They use bright field light and fluorescence microscopy which produces very highly multidimensional datasets. Images are taken at different depths vertically using focal length, and at different developmental stages. Their bright field camera can take 1,000FPS whereas the fluorescent camera is much lower FPS because of how little light is emitted. Combining all of this data into something meaningful is a challenge and they have developed algorithms for automatically aligning the videos both spatially and temporally.

They view it with a software called Imaris http://www.bitplane.com/imaris/imaris and use ImageJ http://rsb.info.nih.gov/ij/

A grad student is using optical flow algorithms to measure bloodflow in the heart, another is using HDR video with temporal registration, and another is doing non-local means of denoising video data.

a) How do you gather data - through direct observation with UV and visible light microscopes connected to computers

b) What kind of technology is used - genetically engineered zebra fish,

c) Does the research make you design new technology - developing new algorithms and software is the goal of the research but the tools used are preexisting

d) How is your data analyzed - using imaris, imagej and custom developed algorithms

e) How do you make assumptions based on the analysis - by comparing the new results to previous results and looking for improvements

f) How does the analysis result in discovery - superior algorithms can lead to accurate models of cell development which is often the goal

g) How do you represent the results - videos, animations, 3D models, graphs and research publications
