The lab solves abstract problems using math and simulation then applies these to robotics. They start with known algorithms and problems and develop new solutions. The data they collect comes from the robotic systems.

First they decide if a problem is unique, and often the results are not necessarily implemented physically. Typically it takes 3-6 months to get "something" and then much longer, a few years, to get something published.

They use stochastic systems, and bio inspired algorithms like chemotaxis, which are connected by underlying theoretical tools.

a) How do you gather data - by direct measurement of robotic behavior

b) What kind of technology is used - ground based robotics, motion capture system, aerial robotics and quadcopters, gps, radio, software

c) Does the research make you design new technology - often the goal is to design new algorithms , so not necessarily. The robotic systems are often bought then modified with additional sensors.

d) How is your data analyzed - with matlab and other software tools, measuring efficiency as recorded by the motion capture system

e) How do you make assumptions based on the analysis -

f) How does the analysis result in discovery - if the behavior was more efficient than the last algorithm

g) How do you represent the results - with graphs and illustrations
