10.17 CASL Gibou Lab

Post by glegrady » Mon Oct 21, 2013 3:35 pm

The Computational Applied Science Laboratory conducts research in two primary areas: The design and analysis of high resolution computational methods for nonlinear partial differential equations, and their application to physical phenomena. Our interests include multiphase flows in porous media, the transport processes of small particles and DNA in micro- and nano-channels as well as the formation of quantum dots and the study of solidification processes.

Mostly theoretical, the lab creates simulations and models which develop together inform and refine one another. Often the outcome of the work is a numerical tool to predict the outcome of specific materials. They plan to compare simulation to real data but are often focused on capturing details efficiently. The models exist as equations and then are simulated on the computer with C++. Their goal is reaching toward simulation accuracy, math stability and validated results.

a) How do you gather data - they produce most of their data through simulations, some data is also from other researchers observations

b) What kind of technology is used - computer simulations and mathematics, their collaborators use nanoscale structures and biomolecules

c) Does the research make you design new technology - the ability to simulate physical phenomena highly accurately allows for new technology to be developed with their research

d) How is your data analyzed - computer simulation

e) How do you make assumptions based on the analysis - comparing results to physical observation

f) How does the analysis result in discovery - accuracy of results and stability of mathematics at extreme values

g) How do you represent the results - visual images and figures
